Did you know that only 5 percent of American students who study abroad are Black? This startling statistic from the U.S. State Department highlights a glaring inequity in global education—one that leaves countless Black youth without the opportunity to connect with the rich histories and cultural legacies that could affirm their identities and expand their worldviews.
For Black youth, learning about their history and traveling to connect with the African Diaspora is more than an educational experience; it is an act of reclaiming identity and building self-awareness. These opportunities allow young people to step beyond the limitations imposed by systemic barriers and embrace their place in a global community. Travel experiences are transformative in fostering a deeper understanding of the resilience, creativity, and contributions of African-descendant communities across the world.

Study abroad programs are often life-changing, yet they remain largely inaccessible to many Black students. Economic disparities and limited culturally relevant opportunities are significant barriers. The focus of traditional programs on European destinations further underscores the need for initiatives that prioritize connecting Black youth to the African Diaspora. When young people can walk the streets where revolutions began, hear the rhythms of their ancestors’ resilience, and engage with communities that reflect their heritage, it becomes a powerful experience that goes beyond academics. It’s about understanding who they are and where they come from, which are essential elements for becoming confident, globally-minded leaders.
Imagine a young person visiting Gorée Island, Senegal, learning about the millions of slaves held and traded there as part of the transatlantic slave trade or exploring the resilience of Afro-Cubans in Havana, Cuba. Picture them walking through Washington, D.C., delving into the historical and political achievements of Black leaders who paved the way for progress. These experiences don’t just inform—they inspire. They cultivate pride and foster critical thinking, allowing youth to see themselves as active participants in shaping a better future.

Before embarking on these journeys, preparation is key. Engaging in workshops that delve into African-centered education equips youth with the knowledge and context they need to fully appreciate the transformative nature of study abroad experiences. Such preparation also addresses systemic challenges like institutionalized racism and health disparities while cultivating emotional well-being and social development. It provides young people with the tools they need to engage meaningfully with the world around them.
Learning about their history and cultural legacy also empowers youth to counter the negative narratives often perpetuated about Black communities. It instills a sense of pride and belonging that can inspire them to challenge inequities and advocate for change. This self-discovery process can be further supported through tools like journaling and reflective activities. Resources such as the book I recently wrote, ROYALTY I AM! Pearls of Wisdom from a Biblical Perspective for the Young King or Queen Within, provide a unique lens for youth to explore their identities. This book serves as a self-discovery and empowerment tool with prompts that encourage reflection and goal-setting. Through such tools, young people are inspired to see their potential and embrace their greatness.

There is something profoundly inspiring about witnessing young people recognize that they are part of a global tapestry of resilience and excellence. When they see themselves reflected in the stories and struggles of others across the African Diaspora, they understand that they are not limited by their current circumstances. They are connected to a lineage of innovators, leaders, and change-makers who paved the way for their success.
The benefits of study abroad experiences extend far beyond the individual. When Black youth are empowered to embrace their history and their potential, they bring those insights back to their communities. They lead with empathy, collaborate across cultures, and inspire others to dream bigger. The world demands that future leaders possess these qualities and cultivate leadership abilities through intentional connections to the African Diaspora.

My love for my community and my desire to see communities of color thrive is why I created the non-profit, OmniQuest Youth Empowerment Initiative. OmniQuest’s mission is to empower under-resourced youth by providing equitable opportunities for social-emotional growth, cultural enrichment, education, and transformative travel experiences. Creating opportunities for Black youth to travel and learn about their history takes resources and commitment from the broader community. Every contribution, whether through funding, mentorship, or advocacy, brings us closer to a world where these experiences are not a privilege but a right.
In addition to teaching Black youth their history in a culturally responsive way—they must experience it. They must walk the paths of their ancestors, hear the stories of triumph and resilience, and see the beauty of Blackness thriving across the globe. I believe that travel experiences ignite their potential, enabling them to rise above limitations to become globally-minded leaders the world so desperately needs.
The next generation is waiting to be inspired. Let’s give them the tools, the opportunities, and the affirmations they need to succeed. Together, we can strengthen communities, honor heritage, and transform the future.
